On May 14th, the Guatemalan government and various international and national organizations participated in the launching of Guatemala’s National Forest Landscape Restoration Strategy 2015-2045. Guatemala has pledged to restore 1.2 million hectares of degraded land through the World Resources Institute’s 20×20 Initiative, as a part of the Bonn Challenge.
Guatemala’s two Model Forests, Los Altos and Lachúa, both participated in the event. Los Altos Model Forest, located in the in the Western Highlands in the Department of Quetzaltenango, and Lachúa Model Forest, located in the Municipality of Cobán in the Department of Alta Verapáz. These landscapes coincide with 2 of the 8 priority areas identified, and the Model Forests are currently working on concept notes to support the implementation of the National Strategy.
